Re-Installing Your Copy of Counselog 4.3

Re-installing your current copy of Counselog should not be necessary. However, if you do want to re-install Counselog for some reason you will need follow the numbered procedure below to make sure you have removed all existing Counselog program files from your computer.

IMPORTANT: You will FIRST need to ensure that you have backed up your Counselog data using the remote safety copy option on the main screen of Counselog - preferably to a removable drive or a remote automatic back up service like Dropbox.

Visit Dropbox for more information about it or contact us.

You must also manually back up some other important files/folders before deleting the Counselog installation folder completely and re-installing Counselog so that Counselog continues to run as before with access to all your data.

BACKING UP THESE FILES AN IMPORTANT SAFETY STEP AND SHOULD NOT BE SKIPPED IF YOU WISH TO CONTINUE USING YOUR DATA.

Now carefully follow the procedure below in sequence.

If you feel this is too complicated for you, and if you have a current Premium Support package, we can guide you through the process over the phone or Skype. Otherwise we may be able to help by email. Please contact us.

(For release 4.2, replace "4.3" below with "4.2".)

  1. First, open the Counselog installation folder on your computer.

On Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 this is:

    C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Local\Counselog 4.3\

(You can open this folder easily by right-clicking on the Counselog desktop shortcut and then clicking on "Open file location".)

    On Windows XP this is:

    C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Counselog 4.3\

<Windows user name> is the user name you use to log into Windows.

  2. Copy the following files/folders to a safe location:

    a)    Your counselling records:  i.e. any files that begin with the name "Cg4 US <Counselog user name>" where <Counselog user name> is the user name you use to log into Counselog.

    b)    The backups folder called "Cg4 backups".

    c)    The docs folder called "Cg4 docs".

  3. Uninstall Counselog using the Windows control panel:  See the following page for more information:

    Windows 10 / 8 / 7 / Vista: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/uninstall-change-program
    Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307895

  4. AFTER ensuring you have copied your counselling records, user license, backups and docs folder to a safe location as instructed in step 2, you must delete the Counselog installation folder that you opened in step 1.

  5. Now re-install Counselog using the installer file you previously downloaded from this website (re-download from http://www.counselog.com/download/ ). Double-click the setup file and following the on screen instructions.

  6. After Counselog is installed, start Counselog by double-clicking the Counselog shortcut on your desktop. Let Counselog complete the setup process. Send the start up email if you like, or otherwise close the email message window to continue.

  7. Log into Counselog using the Example account - the password for this account is in the "Start-up Guide" screen that displays when Counselog first runs (please be sure to read this).

  8. Exit Counselog by double-clicking the exit button on the main page.

  9. After Counselog has fully closed, copy the files and folders you backed up in step 2 back into the Counselog installation folder that you had open in step 1 (it should now have been recreated by the installer). Confirm any prompts to replace files/folders.

  10. Save the permit file that was sent to you by email attachment previously, or request a new one.

If you are restoring your records/files from a back-up made by the Remote Safety Copy feature within Counselog, please see this page.

  11. Start Counselog again using the desktop shortcut and log in using your previous Counselog user name.
